Expanding upon last week’s missive on alienation, I turn to describing how our self-images—our identities—create a second form of it. The first alienation results from the chasm created by the separation of birth. Then, somewhere between six and 18 months of age, we humans begin developing a self-image, the barest beginnings of a narration of the self.
